connecting mindfulness with movement

two birds in palm springs

two birds flying south

our first real vacation together and definitely not our last.

two birds flying south to find serenity from this crazy busy world, to reconnect with ourselves and with each other, to indulge until we need to take a break from eating, and to take the time to grow and learn who we want to be or more importantly who we don’t want to be.

serenity

finding peace.

our airbnb was everything we were looking for to unwind and chill. it had a pool, hot tub, and a fire pit.

we spent our afternoons lounging by the pool, hopping from chair to chair chasing the sun.

it wasn’t quite hot enough for us to take advantage of the pool but we weren’t complaining.

nothing beats afternoon naps in the sun or getting lost in a book.

reconnecting

it’s been a while.

we fell out of practice after our last escape to kamloops back in september but it was like riding a bike - a bit wobbly at first.

its amazing what our body and mind can do when you just have some trust.

trust; that it will know the way you need it to move. trust; that it will protect you when you need it.

not only did we reconnect with each other but as we were practicing a couple of local people who always do acro was at the park.

they were so excited to see other people doing acro that they came over to introduce themselves and they even hugged us.

in our everyday life, they probably would have never even thought twice to say hi to us if they saw us walking down the street.

but because we were connected through movement, we met people we never would have.

it reminded me that all people even complete strangers can connect through movement and build a community anywhere in the world, no matter where we come from and who we are.

Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.

one of the best parts of exploring a new city is trying new restaurants and food; so grateful that we have similar tastebuds and we can always share and try more dishes.

so much food by day four, i had to take a break from eating.

COFFEE ADDICTS

Ernest Coffee

  • serves Portland’s stumptown coffee. my all time fav!

Cartel Coffee

  • drip coffee was really good, americano grew on me.

4 paws Coffee

  • super friendly service but not enough dogs around!

Koffi Coffee

  • local coffee chain, palm spring koffi north has a huge backyard patio.

BRUNCH

Cheeky’s - maple bacon buttermilk waffles & fresh corn pancakes with bacon and blueberries

  • the menu changes daily but the waffle was way better than the pancake. I would not order the pancake again.

Jake’s - avocado toast, and Jake’s egg salad sandwich

  • healthier option and quality ingredients but nothing unique. I would go back.

Elmer’s Restaurant - classic german pancake and Bacon & Tillamook® Potato Cakes & Eggs

  • for a chain restaurant this was pretty good, service was also amazing. I would definitely go back.

The Sandwich Spot - the dream killer (veggie), bbq pull pork, and cornucopia.

  • we went back twice so I would say this place was good.

DINNER

Chicken Now - chicken strips, fries and coleslaw

  • best chicken strips we both ever had. they were crispy, and super juicy. no chicken strips will ever compare.

Rooster & the Pig - fried mushrooms, jasmine tea leaf salad, pork salad roll, and pork belly fried rice

  • they change their menu often but best meal in palm springs minus the pork belly fried rice (nothing unique). all the other dishes were amazing.

Farm Palm Springs - five course meal with salmon and hanger steak entrée

  • the experience and service was good; the salmon cooked perfectly and was the best dish. the hanger steak was a disappointment. the menu also changes daily.

The Poke Haus - poke bowl and burrito

  • not as good as the poke places in vancouver but had a lot of options and service was good.

Dicky’s BBQ - beef brisket, fried orka

  • pretty good bbq for a fast food place. we got it delivered to our airbnb through postmates.

DESSERT

Ice Cream & Shop(pe) - pomegranate chip, mango sorbet and lavender

  • best ice cream flavours i have had in a long time! i want more.

learning

daring greatly

leadership; it’s been a topic on my mind a lot for the last two years. as i discover what kind of leader i want to be and what kind of leader i don’t want to be.

i finished Brene Brown’s book “daring greatly” in six days and will be starting her “dare to lead” book next.

the biggest take away for me from the book is Brene Brown’s leadership manifesto.

it was a reminder i desperately needed. a reminder that this is exactly the kind of leader i want to be, and the kind of leaders i want to surround myself with.

lately, i haven’t been living my best life, i haven’t been my best self. i have been struggling, and struggling a lot.

and it’s been obvious, my energy, my mood, my everything has shifted.

i have been struggling a lot with internal conflict, my own personal values are not aligning with other values.

struggling so much that i haven’t been the leader i want to be at all.

i forgot that even though i feel like i am not in control or have no control, i am and i do.

“a leader is anyone who holds her- or himself accountable for finding potential in people and processes.” - Brene Brown

anyone can be a leader, you don’t need to be in a position of power, you don’t need a title.

each of us just need to feel safe enough to show up and dare greatly.

and yes, most often or not it has to start with the people at the top, but we are all capable and it starts with sharing our values and communicating this is what we want to be apart of.

it’s easy to forget that everything starts within.

Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.

two birds

cruising the streets

one of the highlights of our trip was the unexpected launch of the bird scooters in palm springs. they were dropped off and we were able to use them for the next couple days until an cease and desist order was made by the city of palm springs.

the birds were a great way for us to explore the city without having to sit in a car or walk for hours.

bring the birds back to city of palm springs! you won’t regret it.
