escaping to kamloops
The 386km escape to Kamloops felt like it took way too long, probably because I was the only one who knew where we were going and I may have mistakenly thought it only took three hours to get there (oops).
We started with a short detour to Harrison Hot Springs for lunch at Muddy Water Cafe - a farm to table restaurant. We shared a pulled pork sandwich with minestrone soup that was more like stew and a brie pear toast with the freshest salad I had ever eaten. We would definitely go back and highly recommend it.
When we finally arrived at the Black Box Container Home approximately 20 minutes away from Kamloop city centre and it was absolutely perfect for our weekend escape to rest, recover, and reset from a busy summer at work.
It was hard to believe we were staying in a shipping container with the stylish decor and the thoughtful little touches. Our favourite part was that there was music playing when we arrived, the playlist definitely set the tone for our R&R weekend. We loved it so much we kept the playlist playing the entire time, even while we were snoozing.
I can barely recall what we did when we arrived, maybe a nap, possibly a walk down to the Thompson River, and I most definitely hung out upside down.
Eventually we made it to The Noble Pig in downtown Kamloops for a late night dinner. While we people watched, we enjoyed beef brisket stuffed yorkshire pudding, pulled pork mac and cheese and a herbivore pizza.
And ended the night doing more of something, but nothing.
No matter how hard I try to sleep in - I get restless, all I want to do is work on my passion project. I spend the morning getting lost in time until it's no longer "too early" for a Saturday.
With no where to be, with nothing to do except the motivation to fuel ourselves with some coffee. We eventually make our way to Hello Toast for brunch. I am pretty sure it's the only brunch spot in Kamloops, it was busy and we had to wait but luckily the food was worth it. Their signature spuds were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and we left feeling satisfied but not overstuffed.
Our afternoon and only adventure of the weekend; cycling and wine'ing.
I don't drink but a trip to the Okanagan would not be complete without a winery "tour" and to experience something new and for the first time together.
We set out on our bikes to our first winery Harper's Trail Winery - it was a gorgeous vineyard with a nice patio. I know nothing about wine but I surprisingly really enjoyed the tasting menu.
Our second stop was Sagewood Winery - a family run winery, very different than Harper's Trail. No idea how it was because I was feeling tipsy, ill and anxious, all I wanted to do was to go home and curl into a ball.
Right, this is why I don't drink.
more food, napping, talking, doing our things together and just doing our own thing.
As much as we enjoy eating out, we also never get disappointed when we cook our own food. We get to keep it light, fluffy and tasty.
We finished the day making homemade wraps, watching fear of the walking dead and I pretended to be a top chef by deconstructing my wrap.
Sunday morning, more of the same; waking up way to early for a Sunday. A morning filled with more of doing what lights me up in every way possible until it's time to go.
We pack up, and head out with a short detour to Thompson River University to see how their facility compares to our home turf.
The part we will probably remember forever about this trip, and the only nice to know of the trip is that a 2013 Honda Fit can make it 44km with the empty tank light on. Don't try to drive from Kamloops to Merritt with less than 1/4 gas in the tank, it can be done but not worth the stress.
Kamloops was everything we wanted and needed it to be, a place to just be. A place to escape the work stress, a place to rest, recover and reset. A place to remind me that I am on the right track, knowing I have no interest in looking back at all, and all I have to do is to keep moving forward.
