me versus snowshoeing

jan 2016 to march 2019

january 2016

  • snowshoe grind at grouse mountain

  • an evening hike in the dark running after the pro snowshoers

  • sorrel boots & snowshoes that kept falling off

  • slipping, screaming and falling with a bit of butt sliding

  • massive blisters on both my feet for a week

3 years later…

march 2019

  • hollyburn snowshoe trail at cypress mountain

  • proper hikers

  • snowshoes that didn’t fall off but were clearly too big for my height.

  • a nice leisure hike after sunrise

  • slipping, laughing and falling with a lot of butt sliding

  • no blisters, just some nice glute and core DOMS

my second attempt at snowshoeing, it was just as entertaining but not nearly as painful as my first experience.

i’d do it again, does that mean i won?

hollyburn mountain

cypress mountain

the sunrise snowshoe…

  • 4am wake up, 5:15am meet up

  • quick coffee stop at the new Breka Cafe & Bakery location on Denmam St.

  • we reach the bottom of the Cypress road, and we realize that the road does not open until 7am… sunrise is at 7:24am.

  • the options;

    • wait…

    • go home and sleep

    • quarry rock in deep cove

    • sea to summit in squamish

    • try our luck at seymour even though the website clearly states the road doesn’t open until 7am.

  • we decide to take a nice drive to seymour, tried to drive by the man guarding the road..

  • 6:24am, unanimous decision to head back to cypress to wait for the road to open

  • we watched the man guarding the road move pylons back and forth for 20 minutes until he finally let us through at 7:00am on the dot.

  • i did not do any research on this trail so i had no idea what to expect but it was harder than i expected.

  • 5 + falls later trying to get to the summit, we reach the summit.

  • 10 + slips & falls later trying to get down the mountain, injury free.

  • home by 11:30am
